L’AMOUR ET PSYCHE’

Le vicende mitologiche di Amore e Psiche hanno da sempre influenzato e avuto grande rilievo nella produzione artistica occidentale, sia a livello figurativo, musicale e letterario, iniziando con gli esponenti dell’arte greca d’epoca ellenistica e romana, proseguendo col neoclassicismo, fino a diventare dominio della novellistica popolare.
In Italia fu narrata da Boiardo e da Firenzuola; fuori d'Italia da Molière, Calderón de la Barca, La Fontaine.
Ed è proprio a quest’autore che mi sono ispirato per rappresentare fotograficamente la storia di Amore e Psiche. Scorrendo una dopo l’altra le pagine, mi sono trovato coinvolto e affascinato da queste vicende.
Il percorso iniziatico attraverso il quale l'eroina passa dall'amore narcisistico, poi sensuale, fino al raggiungimento dell'amore puro e generoso, può simboleggiare il cammino dell'anima per raggiungere l'amore perfetto. Ma la violazione del divieto significa anche la debolezza della natura umana e femminile e, nello stesso tempo, la scoperta da parte della donna, delle nudità dell'uomo, dunque della natura sessuale dell'amore. La Fontaine intreccia maliziosamente vari motivi ereditati da una lunga tradizione in un testo a più livelli, misto di prosa e versi.
La figura di Cupido, rappresentata nell’immaginario collettivo da un angioletto biondo che si diverte a lanciare le sue frecce come un bambino, si rivela invece quella di un bellissimo giovane, simbolo dell’Erotismo (Eros è anche il suo nome).
A differenza di molti altri racconti, questo evidenzia la carica sensuale ed erotica che permea ogni pagina, ma senza mai scadere nella pornografia e nella volgarità.
E’ un inno all’amore e il sesso vi è parte integrante, componente fondamentale. Non solo: l’eros raggiunge il livello più alto di purezza proprio nel percorso sacrificale di Psiche, nella sua dedizione totale ad Amore che la porta volontariamente verso l’accettazione dell’estreme prove e sofferenze.
Ho voluto rappresentare così questo percorso, permeandolo di voluttà e dolore insieme, ricreando quello sfondo bucolico che accompagna le vicende. Ogni scena sottolinea un momento particolare della storia: la scoperta della sessualità, la solitudine e la sofferenza di Psiche, e infine la danza sensuale nella ricerca del piacere, non solo erotico ma anche spirituale.

Eros and Psyche

Over the centuries, the mythological tale of Eros and Psyche has influenced - and been a notable artistic stimulus in - western art, be this figurative, musical or literary. Beginning in the classical art of the Hellenistic and Roman periods, through neo-Classicism right up to modern popular short stories. In Italy, the story has been told by Boiardo and Firenzuola, and elsewhere by Moliére, Calderón de la Barca and La Fontaine.
And it is this last author to whom I owe the inspiration to photographically depict the story of Eros and Psyche. Turning those pages, I found myself drawn into and fascinated by the events.
The journey which unfolds as the heroine moves from a narcisistic love, through sensual love until achieving a pure and undemanding love can be seen as symbolising the journey of the soul as it seeks out that perfect love. But violating the forbidden also betrays the weakness of human and female nature and, at the same time, the discovery on the part of the woman of the naked man, and so of the sexual side of love. La Fontaine boldly and mischievously weaves together the differing motifs from this long tradition in his multi-faceted work, a blend of prose and verse.
The figure of Eros - also known as Cupid - is represented in the popular imagination by a blond, boy-angel who spends his time shooting his arrows like a child, but is here more a handsome youth and symbol of that eroticism whose description has taken his name.
Unlike other stories, this one emphasises the sensual and erotic undertones on every page, but never descends into the pornographic or the vulgar.
It is a hymn to love, and sex is an integral part. But it is also more: the erotic seeks out new levels of purity through the sacrificial path chosen by Psyche in her total dedication to Love, which leads her to voluntarily accept the most extreme trials and suffering.
In this collection I have tried to show this journey, infusing it with sensual pleasure and pain together, creating that bucolic background which accompanies these events. Each scene underlines one particular moment in the tale: the discovery of sexuality, the loneliness and suffering of Psyche, and finally the sensual dance of pleasure, not only erotic but also spiritual.

 

Technique

I use Polaroid film on which I work manually both during and after the development phase.
A limited edition printing of 12 only copies, 40 x 40 cm, each one signed and numbered by the artist and printed on Archival Inkjet, with two tests by the artist and three 100 x 100 cm examples on Plexiglas.
